Tongue-in-cheek humour meets edge-of-the-seat suspense in this new adaptation of Erskine Childers’ famous Edwardian novel of intrigue and espionage.

The Riddle of the Sands was written before the outbreak of the First World War to highlight the growing threat to Britain from German military ambitions. The book is considered to be ‘the father of the modern spy novel’ and went on to inspire a generation of writers including John Le Carré and James Bond’s creator, Ian Fleming. It was made into a popular film in the 1970s, starring Jenny Agutter and Michael York and appears on the Guardian’s ‘100 Favourite Novels’ list.

Chalkfoot’s Artistic Director Philip Dart faced a number of challenges when adapting the book for the stage. He says: “The author, Erskine Childers, had a passion for sailing and the book features many descriptions of ship-board life. This is difficult to suggest on stage but when we toured the production last year I was delighted to hear from fans of the novel who told me how well we captured the feeling of being at sea.”

The company returns to touring Kent and Sussex after a successful run at Jermyn Street Theatre in Piccadilly last year, when it received rave reviews from national critics for its production of Tom McGrath’s play Laurel and Hardy.

The Riddle of the Sands has been revived due to public demand following its debut last year, when many performances sold out. After a short tour of the south east Chalkfoot will return to Jermyn Street Theatre for a three week run in May.
