Report for September & October 2009
Our meeting on the 2nd September was particularly interesting as we had Peter Morgan come to talk about local history. He was a brilliant speaker and he had us spellbound with his knowledge and his enthusiasm was infectious!! He has opened a museum in Sittingbourne which contains his collection of articles of historic value for this area. We were so interested in this subject we will be visiting the museum to find out more.
The meeting 7th October was full of plans and discussions of past events and plans for the future. Many members attended a 90th Birthday celebration lunch at The Upchurch golf club for the East Kent Womens Institute. We are also holding another whist drive as well as craft groups and a book club.
The speaker for this meeting was David Harper Mole another speaker with so much knowledge of his subject which was pub and Inn signs. He started off talking about the Ale houses of the 1800's and how they were mainly for the coal miners. Pub signs didn't start 'till later and he had some slides of some really fascinating ones and the meanings and history of some, mostly local.
I think we will be now thinking more about a lot of the pubs we know and wondering what is behind the name.
November 4th is the date of our next meeting which will be the AGM and also incorporating a cream tea. We start at 2.00pm in the community hall in Station Road .
Heather Northfield and Jenny Sargent.
