SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER  2006 MEETING REPORT

In September eight members from Lynsted-w-Teynham W.I. joined other W.I. members from East Kent on a trip to the B.B.C. T.V. Centre at Shepherds Bush. We caught the coach at Sittingbourne and travelled to London, through the City, along the Embankment, and on to Kensington Gardens.  Again, we were lucky with the weather and were able to enjoy a stroll through the Gardens to the Orangery, were we had a lovely lunch; we then walked back through the Gardens to get the coach and travel on to the B.B.C.

There we were met by two young women who were to be our guides.  We saw the News studio and the studio that was used for the choosing of the singer for the role of Maria, and the studio used by the programme Eggheads. Lighting and the use of back screens can alter the look of a studio entirely. It was then time to get back on the coach for the journey home. This was through Knightsbridge, past Harrods and Harvey Nickels and across the River over Tower Bridge. We arrived back in Sittingbourne after a long and enjoyable day.

At the October meeting, members were welcomed by the President Mrs Bid Trim. Apologise for absence were accepted and the general correspondence was read out. A thank-you note was received from Mrs. Doreen Parrish for the card and good wishes after her accident. The Christmas Lunch has been arranged for December and members who wish to attend can put their names on the list. As November is the Annual General Meeting, there will be a Ploughman’s Lunch beforehand and members are reminded to be at the hall for 12.30pm.

Mrs. Bid Trim then introduced the speaker, Mrs Tsuyoko Page who gave a demonstration of the Japanese art of Origami.  This folk art was very popular for hundreds of years in Japan and was then introduced to the West after the Second World War. Just by folding the paper Tsuyoko was able to make various models, a swan, penguin, a bird who’s wings could flap, and a crane. Everybody then tried their hand by making a simple box and a cup. Mrs. Page was then thanked by Mrs. Ann Diamond.

Members then had refreshments served by the Hostesses Mrs. Ann Diamond and Mrs. Joyce Brightman. The raffle was won by Mrs. Biddie Willis, the Flower of the Month was won by a Rose entered by Mrs. Joyce Brightman, and winner of the competition for an object beginning with Y was Mrs. Barbara Hodges.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday 1st November at 2.15pm at the Labour Hall. This will be preceded by lunch for the members at 12.30pm
