Polution sites around our Parish can be found by visiting the Environment Agency website that maps several types of pollution. As a recent look at lichens on gravestones in Lynsted Church established, our air quality is pretty good (although it doesn’t compare with remoter places like isolated parts of the Scottish coast of course. The main contributors to pollution are sited to the north and west of us - the prevailing winds from the south west take most of that away from the parish. Of course, there are issues arising from the heavy traffic on the A2 to the north of the parish and the M2 to the south.
For example,
- Nearest two Industrial sources of Carbon Dioxid and Nitrogen Oxides - Kemsley Paper Mill (prevailing winds take that away from us)
- Nearest Dioxins source - Steel works on the island (prevailing winds take that away from us)
- Particulate and sulphur oxide hotspots - Chatham, Grain, Kingsnorth, Sheerness - mostly where power stations are or major industrial complexes. (Mostly north and west of us)
Similarly you can check for chemical hazards in local sites.
