22nd February to Easter (8th April is Easter Sunday): Lent. This is the period of 40 days (not counting Sundays as these are days of celebration of the resurrection of Christ), when Christians prepare themselves for Easter. This is don by observing fasts, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline (including prayer). Time is deliberately set aside to reflect on Jesus Christ - his suffering and his sacrifice, his life, death, burial and resurrection. The Bible does not mention Lent, but speaks to us about repentance and ‘mourning in ashes’ in 2 Samuel 13:19; Ester 4:1; Job 2:8; Daniel 9:3; and Matthew 11:21.
