Report for January 2007

The President Mrs. Ann Diamond welcomed members to the January meeting; we were also pleased to welcome three visitors, Rose Ingram, Heather Northfield and Sheila Wood. After apologies for absence had been accepted, there followed a short meeting. Among the matters discussed was transport to the Annual Council Meeting at Margate in March and the catering for the Birthday Party in February. A report on the practise of an emergency by the East Kent Emergency Group was given by Ann Diamond, who asked for more members of the W.I. to become volunteers. Ann Diamond announced she will hold a Coffee Morning and Bring and Buy on the 14th March.  Barbara Hodges was announced as the winner of the Competition Cup for 2006; she was congratulated and presented with the cup by the President Ann Diamond.

Ann Diamond then introduced the speaker Mr. Robin Grimes, who would talk about `Pilgrimages along the A2`. Pilgrimages have been made for hundreds of years and Mr Grimes first showed us maps of the old roads and pathways that the pilgrims took.  The main place of pilgrimage was of course Canterbury. From there many pilgrims would go on to France, Spain, Rome and the Holy Land. The Church brought back many relics from the Holy Land that were housed in Cathedrals and Monasteries here, and so people who could not get to the Holy Land could make a pilgrimage to these places.  Mr. Grimes was thanked for a very interesting talk and we hope he can come back again and tell us more about this fascinating subject

Mrs. Betty Bushell won the competition for a souvenir with a necklace from Italy, a Rose entered by Joyce Playford won the Flower of the Month and Rita Weeks-Pearson won the raffle prize.
