An occasional Update for June 2013

We have had a very two interesting months, with two talks, one, on the Big Cats in Kent and the other on a Ugandan Charity with a display of African jewellery.

The Fashion show was successful, and our models did not expect to find themselves as the centre spread in the “Sittingbourne News”.  The Lynsted Blossom Day and the Fashion Show have certainly put the two villages on the map.  Congratulations to all.

A Bursary of £150 has been given to enable one of our members to attend Denman College in Oxford, this is the W.I.’s own college, which provides many courses on a variety of subjects and these can be attended by members, non members and partners.  The college provides accommodation, meals and tutorage. Some of these courses are run as part of an NVQ qualification.  If any of you have watched the television programmes “British Sewing Bee” with May Martin and “Food Glorious Food” with Anne Harrison both ladies are W.I. National Federation Judges in their chosen subject, with a very high standard and a no nonsense approach. A rosette from a W.I. judge is to be cherished.  .  Some of our members are making plans to attend the college in May 2014, for four days.  This will be an intensive course on a subject of their choice and it will be no restful holiday, I can assure you.

In June, Marlene Disney our President will be attending the National Federation Women’s Institute AGM in Cardiff.   This meeting is a big affair in our calendar and quite often resolutions are passed that can influence government thinking.  Over the years these have been as diverse as providing more midwives, food labelling, the bees and the demise of our high streets.  The days of Jam & Jerusalem are still upheld, but our members come from all walks of life and are very aware of the problems that families and government have to cope with today.

Our annual outing will be to Bewl Water 3rd July, and we are hoping for summer to appear at least at on this day.

Please contact the Secretary Mrs. Scott -  tel. 01795 522428 for further information or come along to one of our meetings at the Community Hall Station Road, Teynham, 2pm, first Wednesday of the month.
