Bird Cake for the Garden!

It’s not just us humans that like our comfort food at this time of year. So do the wild birds, well to them it is more necessity than comfort. The winter months are particularly difficult for them. So why not spare a thought for the birds and cook them up a dish? I find this is a good time to discover how much dried fruit I have lurking in the back of the cupboard. As long as it is not ridiculously out of date the birds will not be fussy and appreciate a tasty energy giving treat. Here is “bird recipe” I made earlier and which they went mad for.

Ingredients - makes enough to fill 4 coconut halves

8oz (225g) lard Handful of grated cheese
5oz (150g) currant or raisins Handful of wild bird seed
12oz (300g) Porridge oats

Method

  1. Melt the lard over a low heat.
  2. Once melted add the oat and stir in.
  3. Add all other ingredients and mix well.
  4. Spoon into containers (old margarine tubs or half coconuts are ideal) and press down well.
  5. Place in fridge to set.
