Tips for Safer Surfing

You know the image from the Jaws film - innocent people at play blithely indifferent to or unaware of the snappy teeth of invisible predators lurking just beyond our fingers and toes?  All very dramatic, but life is not generally like that, no matter what our media tells us about how fearful we should all be about just about everything!  Bless them, they do have to sell drama to sell papers.

My point?

Our PCs are complex, they crashe without warning, the software has more bells and whistles than you can shake a stick at, levaing us confuse.  On top of all that you can import additional problems by failing to take care of how you use your computer on-line.

The Police your PC Page on this site listed Microsoft’s three recommendations to help protect your computer:

  1. Install an internet firewall.
  2. Keep your computer's operating system updated.
  3. Install up-to-date anti-virus software and keep it updated.

Microsoft also add four steps to improve your security when browsing and using e-mail:

To help increase your security right now, you can:

  1. Set Internet Explorer security level to High
  2. Add Web sites to your list of Trusted sites
  3. Use plain text to read the e-mail messages you receive
  4. Block pop-up windows in your browser

I have reproduced Internet Explorer guidance alongside guidance for Mozilla’s Firefox browser - which I am a fan of too.
