Flower Festival 2004

LYNSTED FLOWER FESTIVAL 2004 "OUR PRAYERS AND PRAISES"

I do hope you were able to get to the Flower Festival this year, those who did will agree the Church looked absolutely beautiful (a gallery of selected images can be found here). The creativity gets better and better, The theme was a little more challenging this year, but the interpretation of the various Prayers and Praises (exhibits listed here) was inspiring. Everything from prayers for Computer users to Hymns for Gardeners and the God of Concrete and Steel. Many people were very moved by the displays and could be seen writing down the prayers on odd scraps of paper. I had many requests for copies of some of the prayers and if you haven't received yours yet, will you ring me and remind me. (521243). A big THANK YOU for all our arrangers, particularly our new ones, you did us proud

On the whole the weather was kind to us, Friday being the best day and it particularly busy, The catering was A1 as usual, I have never seen such an array of cakes, every flavour you could think of and the Ploughman's were mouth watering, Congratulations to Sue Jewsbury and her team It was good to see old friends being greeted and there was a busy hum of conversation in the eating area. This year the area above the Community Room was available and lunches and teas could be taken up there, a good opportunity to view the flowers from above and also to people watch.

We had a very good craft, plant and bric-a-brac stall, very well manned by Yvonne Bowling who had collected so many plants and items for sale, it must be good for her to have her house and garden back in normal use. The craft display and the needlework, tapestry, art and hand made cards were well worth a second look, such a lot of talent. David Wood showed us how to make candles and this was most popular with our younger visitors, we also learned a lot about the bee and just how much can be made from honey and the honeycomb. Jo Sidney produced two lovely hampers for the raffle and there were other lovely prizes as well. Thank you Jo and to all who donated gifts for the raffle. We are grateful to so many people for their help. To Ann Diamond for making sure the Festival was well advertised, to Nigel Williams for designing and printing the posters and to Ken Diamond who funded this from his can recycling. Thank you to Berta Cockcroft and all those who sold raffle tickets and the Stewards for each day, everything went very smoothly, some people even got a look in to the Mausoleum with help from Trevor Jewsbury.

Our Festival ended with Songs of Praise, which did not particularly fit in with the theme of the Festival, but hymns were chosen by various people who then had to say why they were so special to the theme. These were interspersed with readings and prayers. You could say we ended on a high note.

Flower Festivals are not possible without a lot of help, from a special cleaning of the church, moving furniture around to make the displays possible and simply be being around on the various days. Talking to our visitors and making them welcome is very important.

In total we raised £1, 553.21 p for our Restoration Fund, thank you to all of you who took part and to all our visitors.
