APRIL 2006 MEETING REPORT

The President Mrs. Bid Trim welcomed the members to the April meeting. A new member, Mrs. Marjorie Northrop, was introduced and welcomed to the W.I. meeting. Birthday sprays were presented to Mesdames Dorreen Parish, Barbara Hodges, Gloria Fox, Barbara Skilton and Francis Greenfield.  The coffee morning held by Mrs. Ann Diamond was a huge success and all members who attended or sent donations were thanked, Mrs. Bid Trim also thanked the members who had attended the recruitment meeting.  Mrs. Dorreen Parish and Mrs. Barbara Hodges had attended the Faversham W.I. birthday meeting and reported having a most enjoyable time. 

Mrs.Betty Bushell gave a short report of the Annual Council Meeting at Folkestone. Ann Widecombe M.P.was the main speaker of the day and she spoke of her ambition to be a full time author which she hopes to do when she retires. When questioned on whether she intended to become a member of the W.I. she said she would give it serious consideration.  It was announced that the Federation Chairman for next year will be Mrs. Sue Maylam, who is a member of Lynsted-w-Teynham W.I. sue was presented with a gift and our congratulations and best wishes.

At the Group Meeting, at Herne Hill, W.I. Adviser Mrs. Jean Ambers, spoke of the changes that are taking place and the need for the W.I. to move forward. The guest speaker was Mrs. Eileen Booker of the Marlowe Theatre Canterbury.  Eileen spoke of the facts and figures of the day to day running of the theatre, from light bulbs to scenery and seats and took us on a tour around the theatre. A very informative and entertaining evening was enjoyed by all. 

The meeting continued with future outings and the July Picnic Meeting being discussed and four members were needed for the Top Team Quiz in May. Mrs. Bid Trim then introduced the speaker Mr. Harrison who gave a demonstration on hanging baskets.  He planted the traditional mesh basket lined with moss and invited members to help plant the basket with various plants and gave helpful hints on watering the baskets. He was thanked for all the advice and planting tips he had passed on.

Tea and biscuits were then enjoyed, served by Hostess’s Jean Robertson and Joyce Playford The winner of the Flower of the Month was a Camillia entered by Mrs. Nancy Spears and two winners of the Monthly Competition Mrs. Yvonne Tatton and Mrs. Barbara Hodges.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday 3rd May at 2.15pm at the Labour Hall, Station Road.
